Healthcare in Germany is in the form of a universal multi payer system. The system consists of both law enforced insurance and private insurance. People who fall below a certain income level, have their insurance provided through private non-profit "sickness funds."
Germany has a capitalist market economy like other industrial democracies such as France, Canada, the US, Japan, Australia, etc.
However, like all of them except the US, Germany has a strong social-support network including universal health insurance and education. The current (2012) Chancellor, Dr. Angela Merkel, is considered to be a conservative by German standards yet she supports those social policies as do almost all mainstream German politicians.
