The answer you will get to this question depends on who you ask. Some branches of Christianity teach that God is a single entity consisting of three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This doctrine is known as the Trinity. Many - and perhaps most - Christians believe that this concept is quite clearly defined in the New Testament, and Christians additionally point to many passages in the Old Testament that they believe more subtly indicate the same doctrine. The doctrine of the "three-in-one" Trinity, however was not established until the Council of Nicea in AD 325.

Alternate answersGod is the Father, Jesus is the son. The Bible, God's Word, does not mention the word Trinity anywhere in the Hebrew or Greek Scriptures. The Holy Spirit is God's active force or power to perform all his works, such as creation. They are all separate, not one and the same. John 1:1 is mistranslated, with the word "a" taken out of the original manuscripts. The Word is "a" god, not God, is how it originally read. In the Bible Jesus repeatedly says "the Father is greater than I am". How can they be one and the same and still one be greater than the other. The Trinity Doctrine is false.

The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost (or Holy Spirit) who make up what is often referred to as "the Trinity" are 3 distinct personages. The Father is a physical being. Christ became like the Father after he was resurrected and has the perfected physical body that he allowed his Apostles to handle. The Holy Ghost is a personnage of spirit without physical body. The three are one in purpose and will - which is what Christ asked his apostles to be in chapter 17 of the Gospel of John.

Jesus tells us: "I and My Father are One." (John 10:30)

And He also prayed to His Father to "increase their Family membership":

"...Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given Me, that THEY MAY BE ONE, AS WE ARE." (John 17:11)

"GOD" is a "uni-plural" word, like "family" -- one family made up of many members.

The Bible calls God's church [His 'ekklesia'; "called-out-ones"] His WIFE... who is BEARING HIM MANY CHILDREN!!!

"For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I SPEAK CONCERNING CHRIST AND HIS CHURCH." (Eph.5:31-32)

"The [Holy] Spirit itself beareth witness WITH OUR SPIRIT, that WE ARE THE CHILDREN OF GOD: and if Children, then Heirs; HEIRS OF GOD, and joint-heirs WITH CHRIST; if so be that we suffer with Him, that WE MAY BE ALSO GLORIFIED TOGETHER." (Rom.8:16-17)

Few religions in the world have the foggiest notion of the potential God has given to man, created IN HIS IMAGE.

"Just a Father and Son" doesn't say the half of it. "GOD" is the growing "Divine Family" that created and rules the universe. And the Father's plan all along has been to "procreate Himself"... as man's God-given ability to procreate himself [along with the rest of creation] demonstrates to any with the eyes to see.

"Be fruitful and multiply..." (Gen.1: 28).

God made the first man and woman [the two sexes who became 'one']... and they have been making all the rest of the "clay molds" throughout the generations with the potential to one day be "born a second time" into the "God Family."

It's the binding, unifying power of the Father's "Holy Spirit" that makes He and His Son... and they and the rest of their Family, God's Children -- "ONE."

"Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which SHALL BELIEVE ON ME through their word; that THEY ALL MAY BE ONE; AS THOU, FATHER, ART IN ME, AND I IN THEE, that THEY ALSO MAY BE ONE IN US: that the world may believe that thou hast sent Me." (John 17:20-21)

"And THE GLORY WHICH THOU GAVEST ME I HAVE GIVEN THEM; that THEY MAY BE ONE, EVEN AS WE ARE ONE: I IN THEM, AND THOU IN ME, that THEY MAY BE MADE PERFECT IN ONE..." (verses 22-23).

As it turned out... the first man and woman chose the "wrong god" to obey and worship... and he has been keeping the vast majority of their children blinded to the awesome Truth of God's Word [blinded to their True future as Children of God in His Family]. Kept them suspicious, jealous, envious and hateful of one another -- except for those whom the Father is revealing Himself and calling out of the world, now, to become His "first generation of offspring" who shall rule His coming Kingdom with their "Elder Brother," Jesus Christ.

God is not "just a Father and Son." God is presently an EXPECTANT Father and Son. And their plan is to DELIVER all the rest of their Family members exactly when they are due.

"But every man in his own order: Christ the Firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's AT HIS COMING." (I Cor.15:23)

Additional Comments:

The Holy Spirit is not a separate person or being, but is rather the power and the means by which God transmits His will, influence and presence.

Rather than describing the Holy Spirit as a distinct person or entity, the Bible most often refers to it as, and connects it with, God's divine power (Zechariah 4:6; Micah 3:8). Jewish scholars, examining the references to it in the Old Testament Scriptures, have never defined the Holy Spirit as anything but the power of God.

In the New Testament, Paul referred to it as the spirit of power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Informing Mary that Jesus would be supernaturally conceived in her womb, an angel told her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you . . . ," and he defined this as "the power of the Highest," which "will overshadow you" (Luke 1:35).

Through the working of the power of God's Spirit, humans may be led to repentance and understanding and then following baptism and the laying on of hands be transformed and empowered to live by God's Word.

The apostle Paul comments on Gods' work (obviously through His Spirit) of leading one to repentance.

Romans 2:4 "Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?

Notice the comment of Jesus concerning the working of God's Spirit with the apostles before the Day of Pentecost and the special giving of the Holy Spirit, "the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you." (John 14:17) Jesus went on to explain how the Holy Spirit will be working even more powerfully after they have received power from on high. (Luke 24:49) Further, in John 14:26, "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you."

The apostle Peter understood some significant truths before the special indwelling of God's Sprit given on the Day of Pentecost. "Simon Peter answered and said, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.' Jesus answered and said to him, 'Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven'" (Matthew 16:16-17).

New Testament writers unanimously affirmed the Hebrew monotheistic faith, but they extended it to include the coming of Jesus and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The New Testament evidence for God as a Trinity and not just a father and son, can be grouped into four types of passages.

The first is the trinitarian formula of Matthew 28:19"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost," 2 Corinthians 13:14 "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen," 1 Peter 1:2 "Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied." And Revelation 1:4 "John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace from him which is, and which was, and which is to come..."

*In triadic form, the emphasis is placed on the administration of gifts by the Godhead. Ephesians 4:4-6"There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling. One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all," 1 Corinthians 12:3-6 "Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh in all."

* Mention of the three persons of the Godhead without a clear triadic structure: In the baptism of Jesus (Matt.3:3-7; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22), the Son was baptised, the Spirit descended, and the Father spoke of approval. Paul, in Galatians 4:4-6, outlined the work of the Trinity in the aspect of the sending Father. 2 Thessalonians 2:13-15; Titus 3:4-6 and Jude 20-21 portray each member of the Trinity in relation to a particular redemptive function.

*Jesus, in His farewell discourse to His disciples, explained the work and ministry of the Spirit as the agent of God in the continuing ministry of the Son (John 14:14; 15:26; 16:13-15). The word "Trinity", like "Incarnation", is not found in Scripture; however, it aptly codifies what God has condescended to reveal to us about His nature and being.
