This cannot be fully proved. He had a great deal of insight into different forms of madness, and this was distinct in the characters in his plays (Ophelia, King Lear, and Hamlet were all mad in their specific ways). He was much inclined toward weaving the concept of madness into his work.
Hamlet initially feigns madness, but later on in the play, it seems as if he is actually becoming slightly mad. He sees the Ghost when Gertrude can't and contemplates about death in his soliloquies. However, no one knows if Shakespeare intended for Hamlet to kill Claudius out of revenge or madness. In the end, it's up to the reader to decide.
William Shakespeare was not insane in his ideas, but after the death of his only son Hamnet, he went insane but now enough to be sent to a mental institute. ie. Bedlam Hospital. He was after that considered to still being insane but it was never proven.
There are several theories that Shakespeare never existed, many of them based on the fact that his name was spelled in a number of different ways (including in his signature). However, it should be remembered that the spellings of words had not yet been standardised in English at that time, and names too could be given various spellings.
Although a small number of scholars question his authorship of the plays we attribute to him, the vast majority of serious scholars agree that a playwright by the name of William Shakespeare did indeed live during the 16th and 17th Centuries.
Depends which play you are talking about. Romeo and Juliet? Yes, he wrote that. Othello? Yep, he wrote that too. Lysistrata? Nope, that was Aristophanes. The Misanthrope? No, Moliere. The Seagull? No, Chekhov. Edward III? Hmm, the jury's still out on that one.
He started off by acting crazy. But as the play progresses it seemed like he was actually going insane. Shakespeare left it up to the reader to decide.
