No, the Harlem River does not flow through Harlem. It flows around it.

The island of Manhattan is surrounded by three rivers: the Hudson River, the Harlem River, and the East River. The East River is not actually a river, but an estuary, or a tidal strait. It connects to the ocean on both sides. It flows south from the Long Island Sound, down the east side of Manhattan and the west side of Queens and Brooklyn, and into the Atlantic Ocean.

The Hudson River flows down the west side of Manhattan, and the east side of New Jersey. (Interesting bit of trivia: the Hudson River is actually a fjord. It is the only fjord in North America).

The Harlem River branches off of the Hudson River, and flows down over the top of Manhattan, into the East River.

See the Related Link below for a complete NYC subway map. The Hudson, Harlem, and East Rivers are all labeled.

No, Harlem is in Manhattan. Harlem is a neighborhood in Upper Manhattan. Manhattan is one of the five boroughs of New York City: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island.

There are actually two Harlems, West Harlem and East Harlem. West Harlem (which is normally called just plain "Harlem," by native New Yorkers and out-of-towners alike) is the historic black neighborhood where the Harlem Renaissance took place.

East Harlem, which is also called Spanish Harlem, is a predominantly Latino neighborhood.

Since the majority of New York City's neighborhoods do not have precise boundaries, everyone has a different opinion as to exactly where Harlem begins and ends. This is especially true of West Harlem, as it overlaps heavily with the neighborhood known as Morningside Heights.

Generally speaking, however, Harlem runs south to north from around 110th Street to around 135th Street, on the West Side of Manhattan (from the east side of Morningside Park -- the avenue known as Morningside Avenue -- to Fifth Avenue).

East Harlem runs south to north from 96th Street to around 135th Street, from Fifth Avenue to the East River.

You can find Harlem very easily on a map of Manhattan, as it is the area directly above Central Park. Central Park is bordered by 110th Street to the north. West Harlem encompasses the area directly above Central Park, and the area directly above it to the west.

The western border of East Harlem begins at the northeast corner of Central Park. Central Park is bordered by Fifth Avenue to the east, and Fifth Avenue is where East Harlem begins.

Is Harlem a district of New York?

No, neither Harlem nor Yonkers are boroughs of New York City. Harlem is a neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan. New York City has five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island. There are actually two Harlems: West Harlem, which is normally called just plain, "Harlem," is the historic black neighborhood where the Harlem Renaissance took place. East Harlem, which is also called, "Spanish Harlem," is a predominantly Latino neighborhood. Both West Harlem and East Harlem are located in Upper Manhattan. They border Central Park on its north side. Yonkers is a city in Westchester County. Westchester County is directly above New York City. The northern border of The Bronx -- which is the northernmost borough of New York City -- is the southern border of Westchester County.

How many miles is it from the Bronx to Manhattan?

The Bronx and Manhattan are right next to each other. The Bronx is directly north of Manhattan. The two boroughs are separated by a skinny stretch of river known as the Harlem River. The Harlem River branches off of the Hudson River, flows down over the top of Manhattan (which is the bottom of the Bronx) and into the East River. The Harlem River is about 500 feet wide, so, the distance between Manhattan and the Bronx is 500 feet. See the Related Link below for a New York City subway map, which shows you all the five boroughs, as well as the Hudson, Harlem, and East Rivers. Note that while the top of Staten Island is visible on the map (at the bottom left corner) the entire island is not shown, since the subway doesn't go there.
