It is a nationality. A race is basically the color of your skin, while a nationality is which nation you originate from.

^The above answer is a only half true. Irish is a nationality in the sense that Ireland is a country, so anyone who lives there, regardless of race, is an Irish national.

However, Irish is also an ethnicity, or a subset of the Caucasian race. While they are Caucasian in the sense that they are white, not all Caucasians are alike, in the same sense that the Japanese and the Koreans are not the same, nor are Jamaicans and, say, Kenyans.
