Yes. Julius Caesar, the dictator of Rome, had many enemies amongst the upper class. They did indeed conspire to kill him in the senate on the Ides of March, Mar 15th 44BC. His was attacked by up to sixty people and died from 23 stab wounds. After his death civil war broke out. So Shakespeare's play is fairly accurate.
