Because that's the party he joined in the 1850's. He was originally in the Whig party, but the Whig party fell apart in the 1850's and no longer exists. The Republican party originally started as a group of people, mostly ex-Whigs, who wanted to get rid of slavery in the US, and Lincoln agreed with them.

It should be noted that the political parties have changed over time. You can't think of the Republican party of Lincoln's time as being exactly the same as it is today- there were different issues and different ideas, and these change over time. It may be hard to believe, but around the 1890's and early 1900's, the Republican party was actually the progressive liberal party- quite the opposite of what it is today!
