No, Luigi is not dead, his living with his brother Mario in the Mushroom Kingdom.

It is assumed that Luigi is alive and well, having featured in many recent games with nothing to suggest otherwise. However, there is debate as to whether Luigi was originally intended to be alive. If it wasn't for Nintendo's family friendly policy, a large number of fans speculate that the original Luigi's Mansion game would have been a lot darker, possibly even including the death of Luigi in the game. These fan-based rumours hinge on two pieces of evidence, both originally thought to have come from the beta-version.

1. The first piece is still viewable in-game, so there is discussion whether it is an intensional Easter egg or just a glitch. During a power outage in the game storyline, if the player stands in a certain place in the room, when lightning strikes, Luigi's shadow is cast onto the wall which looks like it is suspended from the ceiling, as if he had comitted suicide. This has lead to people believing Luigi has been a ghost all along.

2. In an image taken from the beta-version for a possible end screen, as the game was originally meant to be time limited and this screen to be shown when the time limit ran out, Luigi is seen to be standing outside the mansion looking as if he is possessed. This disturbing 'Zombie Luigi' has lead some fans to support the 'Luigi is a ghost' theory.

Having said this, the majority of fandom agrees that Luigi is in fact alive, most fans and casual gamers give little credence to the notion that Luigi is dead. However, Luigi has always been able to jump higher than Mario, and lacks traction on the ground... Such as with every form of fiction, this matter is open to personal interpretation and it is ultimately up to the individual gamer to decide for themselves as to which answer would give them the most enjoyable gaming experience.
