It has something to do with the U.S. brewer lowering the quality of the original recipe.
Lowenbrau brewery would rather have lower sales but keep their traditional formulas intact. This beer has been around for over 100 years.

You aren't likely to get the new bottled version which reintroduces the formula that was used in the 60's, but you might be able to get the canned version, which has never not been available. The canned version uses the Schlitz formula that was introduced in the 70's. Your best bet would be a specialty store. Call around, even here in the states its not too easy to find even the canned version.
