Not at all. It is one of the oldest. The Mac was the first GUI operating system to be cheap enough for home use (the Apple I costing $US500-600). Before that were command line operating systems, so Macs are neither the oldest, nor the newest operating system.

∙ 13y agothere is no "best" operating system. it all depends on what one needs a computer for, so i suggest asking a professional in a store to compare your needs with different operating systems.
You should also consider what you plan to use the computer for; as an example, if you work in an company that uses Macs exclusively and you plan to work from home, then it makes sense to use a Mac at home. Conversely, if the company exclusively used Windows it would make sense to use Windows.
There are also some applications are are only available for particular platforms; it is possible to install a virtual machine to run Windows only applications on Mac hardware, but it's an expensive way to get a Windows PC!
Finally, there are things that one operating system does better than others - for example, metadata for files (things like author, title, composer, location of creation) is very well handled in Windows but much more rudimentary in MacOS; that may influence your choice.
