The US Memorial Day was actually begun by the grieving women of the ex-Confederacy, and was originally May 10, the day Stonewall Jackson died. After a few years the idea was co-opted nationally and moved away from May 10, to the end of the month.
There is a Memorial Day in the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is observed on July 1st of every year to commemorate the veterans from that Province and in particular their veterans from World War I. July 1st is also the holiday called Canada Day that the entire nation of Canada celebrates including Newfoundland and Labrador.
