Not usually. This is a displacement reaction. Magnesium is higher in the electromotive series of metals than is hydrogen; therefore, magnesium displaces hydrogen from its compounds. Since the magnesium is oxidized and the hydrogen reduced, this is also an oxidation-reduction reaction. Magnesium chloride is reasonably soluble in water, so that precipitation would occur only if the solution of HCl were extremely concentrated.
