minecraft is only available for download on its official website, minecraft.net. Mojang currently has no plans to release the game in stores on CD-ROM.
Since your payment is for the premium account, which has to go through Mojang itself, it's much easier for them to digitally distribute the game like this, the account is the most important part, the game client itself is relatively small and more easily downloaded than distributed on CD.
