In school the word reading usually does mean that it is required reading. At home no reading is usually voluntary and done mostly for pleasure or curiosity.
I do not believe there is a standardized list of required reading. It will vary greatly from school to school, and even more from country to country. A few things I was required to read in British Literature were Beowulf, The Glass Menagerie, and Much Ado About Nothing.
