The NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System will not allow the engine to start without the use of a registered key.
If a 1997 Nissan Maxima will crank but will not start, there could be a problem with the fuel pump. Another possibility is an issue with the ignition switch.

Check to see if you are using the correct key, the 2002 Nissan Xterra has a chip in the key, but it also comes with a valet key. If the valet key accidentally gets placed in the ignition it will not crank, on some vehicles it completely shuts the vehicle down and you have to get it towed into the dealership, try using the other key that came with your vehicle.
If it is a standard shift vehicle you could push start it.

A bad crankshaft in a 96 Altima could cause the engine not to start. Depending on the crank damage, the engine could start but not run properly.
A few quick things to check- If it does NOT "crank over": Check the battery and cables. Check the in-line fuses. If it does "crank over", but does not start: Check the distributer, spark plugs and wires. Check the air and fuel filters.
