It's position within the Union is the same as Scotland's - although Northern Ireland was never an independent country.

∙ 10y agoNorthern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom and therefore like England, Scotland and Wales it does not operate as a separate country but within that union. England, Scotland and Wales are on the island of Britain, while Northern Ireland is on the island of Ireland, along with the Republic of Ireland.
It is not a country in the traditional sense, as in the sense of a sovereign state. However in the United Kingdom it is common to refer to Northern Ireland as a country that, along with the the other three 'countries' listed above, form the United Kingdom.

∙ 9y agoNorthern Ireland is not part of Britain. However, Nothern Ireland and Britain are collectively known as the United Kingdom. So Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, but not of Britain. Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales.

∙ 9y agoThere is no such place as southern Ireland. It is an informal and incorrect term used to distinguish what is called Ireland, Éire or the Republic of Ireland from Northern Ireland. To answer the question you are trying to ask, yes Ireland is an independent country.
