He was the "Chief" God. You could compare him in a way to Zeus. He was worshipped more than the other gods. These days the God Thor is more well-known.
Odin was honored foremost among the nobility and those who went aviking, but Thor, even back then, was the most popular God. He was the God of common Karl (free man), who worked the field as a farmer. There were far more farmers then vikings during the Viking age.
