Both types of schools cover approximately the same curriculum, which is the same curriculum in any medical school. Osteopathic schools have an additional emphasis on the musculoskeletal system, but this is a minor difference, accounting for less than 3% of the total curriculum.

Graduates of each of these programs are eligible to sit for the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE). Graduates of US osteopathic medical schools have a higher pass rate on this exam than graduates of the Caribbean medical schools.
There is also a practice called "osteopathy" which is common in Europe, which is akin to physical therapy and advanced chiropractic work. Perhaps this is what the answer above is referring to.
It is well-known that it is more difficult to gain entry into any US medical school, including the osteopathic medical schools, than it is to gain entry into the Caribbean schools. One exception to that may be St George's University, which has become increasingly competitive in recent years. That said, it is challenging to gain admittance to any medical school, including the Caribbean schools, because of the intensive prerequisites (Biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, MCAT, etc).
All medical school is hard, be it in the Caribbean, at an osteopathic school, or at an allopathic institution in the US. Ask anyone who's been there.

Who ever wrote the first answer is a complete fool. USMD and USDO are basically the same. The difference is the philosophy and also the fact that USDO receive 300 extra hours of training in OMM. So the bottom line is, USDO are infact more trained than USDO or IMGs. Also the students at DO schools tend to be older who have had much more life experience and are not stuck on doing surgery/radiology because they have seen life. Many DO graduates want to go into primary care in the first place (not that they can not get into higher specialities). For example PCOM is a DO school and its residency match list is next to Harvard's match list so explain that to me. Also DO students match almost 100% of the time, same can't be said for Caribbean students.
DO admission stats are around 3.5-3.6 GPA and 27-30 MCAT whereas USMD stats are 3.6-3.7 and 30-31 MCAT. NOTE THAT CARRIBBEAN STATS ARE: <3.2 GPA and <24 MCAT. Carribbean grads are also restricted to some States and they also tend to get poor residencies, hence they make crappy doctors (because residency is what determines the competence of a doctor not book smarts). Premeds who compare USDO and Carribbean are in their own little world but when they apply for residencies, clinical rotations and jobs, they see the reality of their crappy degree.

They are identical.

Isn't a U.S. osteopathic school easier to get into then a Caribbean medical school?

In the United States, osteopathic medical schools have higher standards thatn the carribean MD schools for the MCAT and entrance GPAs from undergraduate. Osteopathic Physicians are trained in the same curriculum as Allopathic physicians, with ADDITIONAL training in OMM. "Medicine" is not harder than "osteopathic medicine," as osteopathic medicine actually encompasses more.

What is osteophatic medical school?

Osteopathic medical school is a type of medical school in the United States where a student attends medical school for four years and, upon completion, earns the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree. Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, like Doctors of Medicine (M.D.) are complete physicians allowed to apply for licensure, attend residency to specialize in any medical field, sit for board certification examinations, etc. The difference is that in addition to the standard medical curriculum shared with those who go to M.D. medical school, students at an osteopathic medical school also receive 300-500 hours of additional training in a form of manual therapy known as osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM).

How much college and what courses are required to become an osteopathic physician?

There are no courses specifically needed to become an osteopathic physician, but to get into most medical schools, you have to complete (and do well in) core science courses such as biology, chemistry, physics, organic chemistry, etc. Typically, you have to earn a bachelor's degree in undergraduate college, which usually takes about four years although some people manage to get it done in three. After that, you have to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and get into osteopathic medical school and finish four years of osteopathic medical school to earn the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree to become an osteopathic physician.

How can a physcian assistant become a medical doctor?

There are multiple means for which a physician assistant (PA) can follow in becoming a doctor of medicine or osteopathy (MD or DO). Some programs offer what is called as an PA-MD bridge program. However, the need to prepare and sit for the MCAT exam may still remain for American medical and osteopathic schools. A PA could try an overseas or Caribbean medical school that does not have the MCAT requirement. Regardless of the MCAT the PA must graduate from a medical or osteopathic school and complete the USMLE exam sequence to qualify for board certification.

Can a nurse have a doctor of osteopathic medicine DO title?

If they go to medical school and earn the degree, then yes. At that point, however, they would no longer be a nurse, they would be an Osteopathic physician.
