Pocahontas was a Virginian Indian who lived in late 16th and early 17th century. She was the daughter of an Indian chief Powhatan and was captured by English in 1603 and during captivity she converted to Christianity and later on married an English man named John Rolfe. She died in 1617.
Slightly more so than, say, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or Sleeping Beauty.
A few things that are true: There was a Powhatan woman named Pocahontas (born Matoaka, in later life Rebecca Rolfe), the daughter of Powhatan. There was an Englishman named John Smith, whom she may or may not have saved from execution.
John smith was the head of the virgina company, not Radcliffe. Pocahontas was thought to be 11-13 at the time, and she was thought to be treated as John smith's little sister. Pocahontas' father, chief Powhatan was actually the head of many tribes, not just the one shown in the film. John smith was a brunette, and John smith stayed long after he was saved by Pocahontas, and he actually was a very close friend of Pocahontas' father.

The implication of the Pocahontas myth is that when a story is told over and over , pretty soon it gets passed on so much that children are taught the story as if it were true in the classrooms. It shows that truth often gets buried when a story sound interesting but has no basis in fact.
The story of Pocahontas is much more drab in reality and truth than the fanciful fictions written in movies. Pocahontas the movie succeeded as it built on a type of Romeo and Juliet storyline that is always a good sell. Pocahontas the real person succeeded because she stayed true to her cultural teachings.
It is true. although not every little thing in the Walt disney is true of course! but in the us history tale it is all true!
As most know the real life Pocahontas was named Matoka at birth. What most don't know is that her mother who was also named Pocahontas died when giving birth to Pocahontas. It is said by the oral history of the Indians in question that people called her Pocahontas even before the coming of age ceremony when she was about 10. These factors lead her to choose the name Pocahontas.Source: The true story of Pocahontas: the other side of historyBy Linwood Custalow, Angela L. Daniel
John Rolfe . Married him in 1614. The story about Smith is not true. He did NOT save Jamestown. He was only there a very few months and he lied about his contribution to the settlement in a book he wrote several years later. He also made up the story about Pocahontas and she died young so couldn't refute his story. The man who did save Jamestown was the husband of Pocahontas and gave tobacco seeds to the colony. That was John Rolfe.
