There were rapes of the slaves as well as whippings and cruel punishments for slaves who would continuously try to escape and whom they believed would possibly encourage others to do the same.
There was resentment toward blacks after the civil war and there were people who believed they should still be slaves and still be their property. They went around terrorizing black Americans to so called "keep them in their place". These people were the precursor to the KKK or Ku Klux Klan.
