Not silly but stupid naivety. Russia's Stalin should not have been trusted. Why ? He forgot to leave the countries that he " freed ". Instead he brutally occupied them to spread his dreams of worldwide domination and communism. The evil force of Nazi Germany was replaced by the evil force of Stalinist Russia.
Russia had lots of men in their army, but not so many supplies. There was often two men staying together, one with a gun, and the other armless. When/if the guy with the gun was killed, the second guy grabbed his gun and took off. They had Stalin, a very cold, evil man. Quote from Stalin: "One death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic." Russia's civilians were starving and dying in the streets. These may be reasons that Russia would want a port in WW1. (Evil dictator; army status.)

Since what was to become Russia was founded by Rurik in about 862 AD, Russia has had many names and titles. Russians refer to it as Rossiya. Germanic speaking people refer to it as Rusland (the land of the Rus) During the Soviet period, it was known as the RSFSR and later the USSR. Westerners frequently referred to it as Russia by default, or "Mother Russia", plus a variety of uncomplimentary titles, such as the "Evil Empire" applied by former US president Ronald Reagan. In literature, Russia has been referred to as "the Bear", and "the Eagle", the double headed eagle being a symbol of Tsarist Russia and more recently, the Russian Federation. Russia is too geographically large and ethnically diverse to be given one nick name.
