Russia is a military threat to the US in terms of the size of the country, the amount of nuclear weapons that Russia holds, and the fact that the US gains military weapons from Russia and Arab countries.
The relationship between the two countries has been better, but it has also been worse during the Cold War. Today, it is "prickly ", but fortunately both realize (at this point) it doesn't pay to be enemies. To some extent each distrusts the other but this is due to past history and to the fact that Putin is aggressive in his policies. It is a matter of a balance of power between them and Europe. The United States keeps an eye on troop movements of Russia in Eastern Europe and with Iran. I think the best term to used is friendemy. Both watch the other.
Yes Russia is friends with us even though they are Communists and We are a Democracy.
Yes. Russia and the US are still enemies.

Sergey Ivanovich Kislyak is the Ambassador to the US for Russia.
"We" as in the US were friendly with "Russia" (as opposed to the Soviet Union) and provided military assistance during the Russian civil war, November 1917 to October 1922. Let it be noted that while the state of Russia was part of the USSR, and the US and Soviets were allies during WW2, they were not friends, as those who became the USSR were the opposition during the previously mentioned Russian civil war, and "Russia" was not technically the nation but part of the larger Soviet Union.
