If you've done your time, earned your E4 rank.. you won't be comparable to a Sergeant, but there'll be times when you may be tasked with leadership duties. Specialist rank is commonly referred to as the "sham shield", because an E4 is more easily able to get out of details than a Private, or even a Corporal or Sergeant, who is going to be tasked with supervising those details.
