Miss Maudie is the Finch's neighbor and Scout and Jem always visit her and she makes them cakes. She likes to be outside and water her flowers. She has been in the neighborhood for a long time and doesn't find it as necessary as Aunt Alexandra does.
Alexandra and Scout pretend that nothing is wrong when they return to the ladies because they want to maintain appearances and avoid causing a scene in front of others. They realize that it is not the right time or place to address the issues they are facing.
Scout tries to avoid going to school by pretending to be sick, missing the bus, and being stubborn about attending. She finds ways to delay the inevitable and expresses her dislike for school through her actions.
