Why is Severus Snape called the Half-Blood Prince?

The Half-Blood Pince was a name Snape choose for himself. HIs father, Tobias Snape, was a muggle and he despised magic so much that he constantly fought with his wife while neglecting his son. Severus Snape spent most of his childhood listening to his parents screams or staying out of the house to avoid them. When he joined Hogwarts, the other students noted that his name was not that of a wizarding family. Snape wasn't ashamed of being a half-blood but he was ashamed of his father. So he used his mother's maiden name, Prince, and fashioned a new nickname for himself - although he kept it to himself.

Is harrys mother a muggle?

Snape grew up in extreme poverty with his parents, Eileen and Tobias Snape, who appear to have had a bad, and possibly abusive, relationship. We get to see them very briefly in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, when Harry accidentally breaks into Snape's mind and sees some of his childhood memories. One of the memories he sees is Snape's dad yelling at Snape's "cowering" mom (USA Scholastic hardcover edition, p592). They are also mentioned in the last chapter of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, "The White Tomb," and again in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, during "The Prince's Tale" chapter.
