The most important way in which the film differs from the play is the addition of a famous scene known as "Coffee's For Closers" written by Mamet involving a character named Blake, written specifically for Alec Baldwin. Blake gives the main characters a more immediate motivation for selling real estate - namely that their jobs are on the line. The scenes that show Shelley going to visit an uninterested potential client were added for the film. Some of his phone conversations are added as well. The additions add an even deeper sense of sad desperation for Lemmon's character than appeared in the original play. The film also differs in geographic location. While the play's original references to the Chicago area remain intact throughout, the film credits list it as having been filmed "on location" in http://www.answers.com/topic/new-york-city-of-southern-new-york. As such, there are some scenes which do refer to New York, such as the opening scene, in which the pay phone Shelley Levene (Lemmon) uses clearly reads "New York." Also, George Aaronow (Arkin) comments to Shelley, "I had a woman in White Plains on the hook ...," an obvious reference to http://www.answers.com/topic/white-plains-new-york. The final scene also features a subway car with "Sheepshead Bay" (as in http://www.answers.com/topic/sheepshead-bay-brooklyn, http://www.answers.com/topic/brooklyn) as the destination. The scene in which Pacino's character arrives at the office clearly shows an http://www.answers.com/topic/new-york-city-police-department squad car. However, when Shelley engages in conversation in one scene he twice says "Kenilworth" - which is the name of both an affluent Chicago suburb on the north shore of Lake Michigan and a middle class New York City suburb in http://www.answers.com/topic/union-county-new-jersey. David Mamet also altered the original ending of the movie. In the play, Roma flatters Shelley and suggests that the two work together. Then, when Shelley leaves the room, Roma turns on Shelley and reveals that his flattery was only a con to get a share of Shelley's sales. In the movie, this last-second turn is omitted, and Roma's flattery is assumed to be sincere.

Both are set in the middle ages and Macbeth is a warrior chieftain bucking for higher rank. the script is straight from Shakespeare. On the other hand the title character has been made up to ( particulairly in the Dagger of the Mind scene) to look like Charles Manson and the three Witches are more sexy than Shakespeare ever intended. still takes place in dark ages, but with Polanski at the helm- some side glances at the horrific Manson Murders. The phrase Dagger of the Mind- could very well be applied to, let us use Polanski"s accent- Droggs!

Shakespear's Macbeth is also not historically accurate. His name in Gaelic is MacBeathadh, which means "Son of Life". This Macbeth had royal blood in his veins, and strengthened his claim to the throne by marrying the widow Gruoch who was descended directly from the royal line. Historical Macbeth was immediately accepted as King of the Scotts, and crowned at Scone, where all the Scottish monarchs were crowned. He went on to reign for 17 years (1040-1057), and felt secure enough in his power to take a pilgrimage to Rome in 1050, where he, according to the Chronicon of Marianus Scottus (1028-1083), "scattered his money like seed among the poor". This Macbeth may not have been the best king Scotland had ever had, but he was certainly a very capable one. Macbeth's reign eventually met difficulties in a battle against Earl Siward of England (with Malcolm tagging along) Historians do not know where this battle took place, but it was a long and bloody encounter. For the next three years, the Macbeth of history retreated to his powerbase in Moray. By 1057, however, Macbeth's support drained away, and Malcolm faced Macbeth again in battle. Macbeth was eventually hunted down near the village of Lumphanan, in Aberdeenshire, and was killed there. His head was brought to Malcolm either on a pole or on a golden platter. The real life Macbeth, being a former King of Scotland, was most likely made that bad guy to please King James.

Lady Macbeth is Macbeth's wife. In the beginning Macbeth was very timid although hidden within him was a strong wish to become king. Lady Macbeth is very ruthless, she states that she would do anything to get what she wants - even kill her own child. By the end of the play, it seems that the two have switched. Lady Macbeth is sleep-walking and seems troubled by what she has done, yet Macbeth has no problem continuing to kill all who get in his way.

Yes he was. Many changes were made to the historical events, most of them long before either Shakespeare or King James I were born. The real Macbeth first of all did not 'murder' King Duncan, but killed him in battle - which was at the time considered a perfectly honorable way to do away with an enemy. Nor did he do so at the instigation of his wife. He was however by the standards of the time uncommonly close with his wife, which was probably known to Shakespeare and used by him in this way for dramatic effect.

Finally he did not, as in the play, murder a 'good' king, going on to start a reign of terror himself. In reality, king Duncan was much disliked by the Scots and his replacement by Macbeth was heartily supported. Macbeth went on to be a good an solid administrator for 17 years and was a popular monarch, being described in contemporary writings as a 'generous' king.

And how! Macbeth (the real one) was a successful king who reigned for 17 years, during which time Scotland was so peaceful that he was able to leave the country to go on a religious pilgrimage. He did not murder King Duncan in order to claim the throne; Duncan attacked Macbeth at his home in Moray and Duncan was killed in the battle. Duncan was at that time about 40 years old and was nicknamed "the diseased". Macbeth died as a result of wounds he suffered in a battle against invading Englishmen with whom Malcolm Canmore (the Malcolm of the play) had allied. Malcolm is said to had dealt the fatal blow. Macduff is a fiction. Macbeth was succeeded, not by Malcolm, but by his stepson Lulach, son of Lady Macbeth by her first husband Gillecomlan. Interestingly, Lulach, unlike Duncan, really was murdered--by Malcolm.
