Tahiti is a part of French Polynesia, which is a TOM, a Territoire d'Outre-Mer. Its relationship to France is very like that of American Samoa to the US; an ex-colony which has become a Territory. However, citizens of American Samoa are US Nationals, not Citizens, whereas citizens of French Polynesia have all the rights of French Citizens.
