Tasmania is an island and is the southernmost state of Australia. It was originally named Van Diemen's Land, and was claimed as part of New South Wales when Captain Arthur Phillip raised the British flag upon arrival of the First Fleet in Port Jackson on 26 January 1788.

Tasmania became one of the states of Australia in 1901 when all the colonies federated and became the nation of the Commonwealth of Australia.
