Trinidad and Tobago was discovered by Christopher Columbus (Cristobal Colon) in October 1498 on his 3rd Voyage and he claimed the islands in the names of the King and Queen of Spain. Trinidad was settled properly from 1592 with the founding of San Jose de Oruna. We remained under Spanish rule until the British took the island with very little resistance in 1797. Trinidad and Tobago became a British Crown Colony until the British granted independence on 31st August 1962.
