Not exactly, but they are extremely similar. All members of the World Trade Organization must adhere to a minimal set of copyright rules outlined in the Berne Convention:

  • protection without formalities: registration cannot be required, but it may be offered additionally (the US chooses to offer registration)
  • protection for at least the life of the author + 50 years (the US and a few other countries have expanded this to life + 70 years)
  • respecting the rights of authors from other signatory countries

Must a copyrighted symbol be displayed to protect the copyright?

In the USA and more than 160 other countries of the Berne Union, the answer is that no copyright notice is necessary. This has been the law in the USA since 1989, meaning that things published prior to that, by US authors in the USA, were required to have copyright "notice", whether using the word "copyright", "copr." or the copyright symbol, followed by the publication date, followed by the name of the copyright owners. Laws for Copyright notice in other countries may vary.
