The oldest early entrance program in the United States today is operated by Shimer College in Chicago. The Shimer program has been running continuously since 1950, when Shimer adopted the Hutchins program from the University of Chicago. There were earlier programs, but none remain in operation today. Most notably, the University of Chicago began offering early entrance in the 1930s under the administration of Robert Maynard Hutchins. However, the University of Chicago terminated this program shortly after Hutchins' departure in 1950.
