Yahweh (YHWH) appears to have been used by the early inhabitants of the southern kingdom of Judah as the name for their God. The early inhabitants of the northern kingdom of Israel appear to have used the name 'elohim for their God. It is not certain whether Yahweh and Elohim were perceived to be the same God at this stage, but that was certainly the case much later. It could be important in establishing whether the anthropomorphic God of Judah or the more transcendent God of Israel, who required obedience and was feared by his people, was the true God.
