Zambia is still a very poor country but has shown signs of improving under the current government. The original UNIP government of Kenneth Kaunda set the country back many years by taking over and mismanaging the copper mining industry. This vital industry has never recovered. New agricultural initiatives and the discovery of new coal deposits will help redevelopment .

Well I'm Zambian so I can only answer this question from my perspective.

If you compare Zambia's age to the age of most developed countries you'll find it is quite young. Zambia only gained independence from the British 48 years ago so it's a relatively young country.

Of course other factors like corruption have negatively affected the distribution of government funds. So instead of the money being used to develop the country i.e build schools or hospitals, it is lining government ministers' pockets.

I hope this has helped....

Namibia finds itself where many countries in the region may find themselves over the next several years.

Namibia is one of the richest countries in Africa. The country's GNP per capita was calculated at $2,334 USD (December), compared with an African average of $681 USD for the same period. Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, is one of the cleanest, best sign-posted and most beautiful cities in the world. Namibia has one of the most sophisticated, diverse and developed financial systems in Africa. The 2011/12 Global Competitiveness Report assessed the banking sector of Namibia as being sound and stable, ranking it in seventh position in Africa. The education sector is a priority, receiving the largest share of the national budget of about 22% in 2011/12. About 10% of the total budget is allocated to primary education and 2.3% to secondary education. Namibia has one of the best health care systems in Africa, as measured by both its population-to-doctor and its population-to-hospital-bed ratios. Emphasis is placed on primary and preventative health services.

It is now a poor country thanks to the Kaunda government nationalising the copper mines and mis-managing them ever since.
