The most widely spoken European language in Zimbabwe is English. The country is a former British colony named Southern Rhodesia and latterly simply Rhodesia following the independence of Northern Rhodesia now Zambia. The country has close ties with South Africa and notoriously declared unilateral independence from Britain in the 1960s to maintain white minority rule. Following a bitter civil war, majority rule was conceded and the country became the independent state of Zimbabwe.
