Well, it is a rifle, but dozens of companies make rifles in .243 caliber.
caliber limitations are set by the hunting ministry in your region, eg 243 for deer(smallest) 22lr for smll game eg rabbits and so on
most enthusiasts will agree that the M4 is an excellent weapon. Hunters will not agree that the .223 caliber is good for deer hunting. the popular calibers for deer will be 30-06, .243 winchester, 30-30, and .308 winchester.

No, you cannot, and attempting to do such would be extremely dangerous.
The current value of a remington model 600 in .243 winchester caliber is between 160 dollars for a rifle with 60%of its original finish remaining up to 475 dollars for a rifle with 100% original finish remaining.
General rule of thumb is that the best caliber is the one which best suits you. Of the two, .270 would be the more powerful round. Both are substantial for hunting something like deer, although the .243 is probably better suited for the experienced hunter, whereas the .270 would be a little more forgiving to the novice hunter. The .270 is a necked down .30-06, and the .243 is a necked down .308.
Depending on condition, your Savage rifle is selling for $600-$700. Very nice rifle, versatile caliber.

Remington produced a slide action (pump) rifle known as the model 760. One of the cartridges this was offered in was .243 Winchester- basically a .308 cartridge necked down to .243 caliber. See the link below for an article on the 760, and some pictures.
