This is based off of the person, some people find them to be fine while others (like myself) do not. 13 inch laptop can be convenient if you are toting it around a lot and need something small and lightweight. I personally find the screen size too small.

The only thing that may make it seem like they consume more power is that larger computers have better hardware that require a tad more power. Adjusting your settings properly will allow for you computer to last quite a while on just battery life.
I am a college student and using my 17" MacBook Pro isn't a hassle at all, I tote it everywhere and use it all the time. I would personally recommend you find something with a 15" or larger screen but again it is personal preference on the screen size. Too small for some, just right for others.
