Coins can be shiny without them being Proof.

A Proof coin is struck on specially prepared and polished dies. The finished coin will have a mirror like finish on the flat surfaces.

Proof coins are sold in protective packaging to protect the finish.

If the coin has maintained its finish, there will still be the high quality finish with no dents, scratches of other damage to mar the coin.

A proof coin that has been handled or circulated has lost its Proof finish and any collector appeal and value it may have had.

Are there any known defects in the 1918 Australian penny?

There are no documented or known defects on 1918 Australian Pennies, that I can find. An uncirculated coin in mint condition could be worth quite a few thousand dollars. The only slightly unusual thing about them is that there were minted in Calcutta, India.

Why is the 1930 Australian Penny so valuable?

Not all Australian coins are considered to be valuable, just some. Not including Proof coins, bullion coins and other non-circulating coins made from precious metals, the most valuable Australian general circulation coins (all now withdrawn) in no particular order are -1930 Penny1923 Halfpenny1915 (H) Florin (Two Shillings)1920 Penny (no dots on reverse)1925 Penny1915 (H) Shilling1912 Florin1913 Florin1914 (H) Florin1932 Florin1933 FlorinAny of these coins should get $10,000 AUD or more in mint uncirculated condition. It should be noted that you are very unlikely to see any mint uncirculated examples of these coins outside a museum or the collections of very wealthy collectors. The (H) is a very small mintmark, usually on the reverse, indicating that the coin was struck at the Heaton Mint in Birmingham, England.Currently, there are no spectacularly valuable Australian decimal coins, but that may change in 50 or 100 years.

What is a penny piece made from?

First lets define "Penny Piece". A Penny Piece is a quite unattractive lady. If you see any lady that is under a 5.5 on the lady judgment scale, she is in fact a Penny Piece. So a Penny Piece is made from a man and a Penny Piece mating to conceive another Penny Piece.
