The 30.06 is an older cartridge that has been used to take just about every category of large North American game. It is common and easy to find in every gun shop and many hardware stores. It is an excellent hunting cartridge, although its ballistics do not match some of the newer cartridges such as 7mm mag or even the cartridges developed off of the old 30.06 case, such as the .270 or the .280 Remington. In short, the 30.06 will not have the speed (flatter trajectory) of some newer calibers, but it is as accurate as the normal hunter could need and hits like a ----- to allow the hunter to take game from deer to elk and moose. It will certainly take black bear as well. Going north to hunt grizzly? Many have been taken by the venerable 30.06--but then it's all about shot placement. I'd really suggest a larger caliber for Grizzly. Of course, you should adjust bullet weight according to the size of game. You need not use the same weight bullet for a whitetail deer as you would use on a moose or even an elk as you do not need the stopping power. Ask at the gun shop to compare the various 30.06 shells available so you can appreciate the difference. Hope this helps. KW
