Hi,
No matter if it is a little dog, big dog, cat or even another bird has potential to hurt and even kill your bird. You should have a good sturdy cage that you can shut the door and latch it. Most important is you should never leave a bird outside of his cage unsupervised whether you have other animals or not. A bird unsupervised can very well end up a dead bird.
As for the dog you are talking about getting.....is it a puppy or an adult? Will it be living inside the house? Either way you will have to teach the dog what he can and cannot touch. By using the word "off" and taking the dog away from what you do not want him to touch you will be telling the dog to do something. ex. Get "off" the couch. He will pick up on it pretty quick if you are persistent. If it shows a big interest in the bird you will be saying "off" a lot. Just remember to praise and make a big fuss over how good he is when he obeys. Some will reward with just the "oh your such a good dog" others will use food as a reward. One of the best rewards is to keep his favorite toy to use as the reward. How ever you decide remember patience, patience, patience.
