During WW2, with all the negativity surrounding Germany, the German Shepherd Dog's name was changed for a few years. They were called Police Dog in some countries, but they were also called Alsatian. The name changed back after the war.
To date, in Brittain they still refer to the German Shepherd as Alsatian in many cases.
There is some talk of another spin off breed being created called the American Alsatian, which is basically just a German Shepherd not of any particular type (Working or Show) bred in America.
