The MacBook Pro is Apple's most "recent" and powerful Laptop Computer. It comes in 13" and 15" form factors. Apple's Retina MacBook Pro's offer a 2560X1440 resolution so if your interested in Photography, video editing or anything involving the "need" for a high-resolution display on a portable device, the MacBook Pro Retina in either 13" or 15" is your best bet. Pricing is dependent on which model and specification you go for. Apple currently (however, rumours say they might not offer soon) a "Standard" 13" MacBook Pro, which hasn't had a spec bump since 2012 and offers an i5 Processor and 4GB's of Ram. The bare essentials for any computer user, especially in 2014. This model retails for £899 in the UK All the other MacBook Pro's come in Retina form factors and considering it's "only" another £100 in it between an older generation and a newer one. Going Retina is your best bet!
In regards to the MacBook, it's an ageing computer which probably won't be supported for much longer as every year Apple drops a model from their update cycle if they can't see it working with their newest OS. All Retina models should support the newest version of OS X (OS XI next year?) whereas the MacBook's life in Apple's eyes may be dropped in the future. If your strapped for cash the MacBook is the most cost effective product (If your budget's £300 and below) but I wouldn't advise it.
It's your decision but if your going to invest in Apple's ever evolving Eco-System. The Pro's your best value in the long term.
Hope this helps :)
