The 360 has alot of memory. Even if you want to go spend the extra money and get another hard drive you would just be better off if you wait until or if you need it. I would just invest in getting xbox live, this makes games alot more fun to play and you can download extras to the games. A hard drive is used for storing game progress files, aswell as music, pictures, videos, and saves. The average game can use about 500 Megabytes (just under half a Gigabyte).

Although it is not necessary to have a 120 Gigabyte hard drive, many people complain that the smaller size hard drives do not have enough memory.

Having a 120 Gigabyte hard drive can be handy to have though, as you can store more files (pictures, videos, music, etc.) than the traditional 40 Gigabyte size.

What is the difference between Xbox 360 and Xbox arcade?

The Xbox Arcade is an Xbox 360 and it comes without a hard drive. What you are calling an Xbox 360 I'm assuming comes with a hard drive and if you are thinking of buying an Xbox I recommend not buying the arcade as you cannot save games without a hard drive.

Your Xbox 360 Elite no longer recognizes your 120 GB hard drive after attempting to transfer files from a smaller drive?

A little more on the xbox problem... I recently purchased an Xbox 360 Elite from a pawn shop to upgrade my older 360 with a 20gb drive. I bought a Microsoft transfer cable from Ebay, and it came a disc with several PC programs to transfer the files from the old 20gb to the 120gb drive via your PC. I pulled the information off the 20gb with no problem, but when I transferred the information to the 120gb and plugged it back into the Elite, it no longer recognizes the drive. My 20gb still works and I am currently using it on my Elite to play games. The 120gb drive did initially work when I bought the system, but ceased to work when I tried transferring files. When I search through the 120gb drive on Device Manager on my PC, it shows Partition 3 did not copy as it should to the new drive. It shows a bunch of Japanese-looking characters instead of the three or four folders that should have transferred from the 20gb. I initially used a program called Xport 360 to transfer the information; when that didn't work, I tried Xplorer 360 Extreme 2. Both yielded the same results: the Elite no longer recognizes that I have the 120gb drive attached to the Xbox. Did I completely fry the drive, or is there hope for me to salvage the 120gb? HELP!!!
