Omnivore
Omnivore
Most bears are omnivores. The only bear that is considered carnivorous is the polar bear, and on the other side of the scale, the Giant Panda is herbivorous with a restricted diet of bamboo. All other bears are omnivorous, and may be more herbivorous than carnivorous depending on what food is made available to them.
Grizzly bears are more herbivorous than black bears, and will often graze grass during the summer and feast on berries in late summer. They will catch and eat fish during the spring runs, and try to run down and catch a young elk, bison or deer (or unwary adult) to eat. Bears have also been known to raid farmer's grain and feed bins for food, and tear into garbage bins for tasty morsels people have tossed away. These bears will eat almost anything they can get their paws on, depending on what's available and what their noses can sniff out and what they can catch or get into. People have even disappeared in the wild without ever returning and much speculation of these disappearances are due to bear attacks and bears eating humans.
Black bears are no different from grizzlies, except they tend to like to try to eat a little more meat from a variety of animals from mice to deer, and will also graze grass and eat berries and raid a farmer's storage bins, a town's garbage bins, someone's birdfeeders, or even sneak into someone's house to see what's available to eat. Just like with grizzlies, they will eat anything given the opportunity and availability. It's not uncommon for a black bear to make a meal out of a beloved pet like a small dog or cat.
Their carnivorous reputation non-withstanding, most bears have adopted a diet of more plant than animal matter and are completely opportunistic omnivores. Some bears will climb trees in order to obtain mast (edible vegatative or reproductive parts such as acorns); smaller species which are more able to climb include a greater amount of this in their diet.
One exception is the polar bear, which has adopted a diet mainly of marine mammals to survive in the Arctic.
While the polar bear is mostly carnivorous, and the giant panda feeds almost entirely on bamboo, the remaining six species are omnivorous which means that eat both plants and animals just as we do.
With the possible exception of the polar bear most bears are considered omnivores.
It varies by species, but most bears are omnivores. They may lean heavily towards being carnivores, but most will eat fruits and berries.
Most bears are omnivores, they eat both meat and veggies, but koala bears and panda bears are herbivores.
