The answer is both yes and no. If the calculations are rather simple, you know certain shortcuts, you know how to work it out on paper, or you are good at doing it in your head, then no, you don't need a computer or calculator. Yet you would need one for more complex problems, even when you are working things out on paper.

But then again, if you consider the fact that your brain is a computer, you would have to say yes. You would need at least the "computer" that resides in you skull to work the problems.
