To stand trial, one must have the ability to understand the courtroom procedures and be advised by counsel. Even if one manifests various personalities, or otherwise exhibits mental illness such as delusional behaviors, that in itself will not prohibit the person from being prosecuted for a crime. The ability to stand trial, or competency, is not the same as criminal responsibility for the act.
It is interesting to note here that if the defense seeks to show that the crime, of fraud or attempted murder, for example, was in fact due to some mental instability that proof may weigh in on the plea bargain or sentencing, or possibly even the verdict ( verdict may return in manslaughter as opposed to premeditated murder).
