Probably not.

Chocolate is NEVER good for dogs, but it's sometimes not bad enough to be noticed.

Here's a rough recommendation for what's dangerous:

1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate

1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate

0.1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Baker's chocolate

Dogs shouldn't be allowed to eat cake in general; about the only thing that's in cake that's even remotely close to a normal food for them is eggs (dogs don't normally eat eggs, but eggs are in the meat group, and they do eat meat).

Red velvet cake in particular is a type of chocolate cake, and chocolate is somewhat poisonous to dogs.

If your Great Dane snaffled up a crumb of red velvet cake that fell on the floor, there's no reason to panic. If your Chihuahua completely devoured an entire cake, then you might want to at least call the vet and get an opinion. And, as mentioned, you certainly shouldn't intentionally feed any dog cake; among other things, the sugar is bad for their teeth.

It is a type of chocolate cake. Red velvet cake is not the same as adding red food coloring to chocolate cake. But if you want the same color as one, but don't mind it not tasting like a Red Velvet cake, you can add two ounces of red food coloring to a standard chocolate cake mix or recipe. Also, red velvet cake is usually frosted with a cream cheese frosting or a cooked, whipped frosting.

Is the red food coloring required for red velvet cake or can it just be velvet cake?

Red velvet cake is a semi-chocolate cake that has had enough red food coloring added to it to make it look red. If you don't wish to add the food coloring, it would simply be a cake with a slight chocolate flavor and a cream cheese icing.
