Screws are not always the best solution for fastening construction materials. In fact, in some cases screws are not an option. For instance, screws have great withdrawal or holding power. It's much harder to pull a screw out with a hammer than a nail. However, nails are much stronger in shear (sid pressure) than a screw is. This is due to the fact the shank is reduced in order to make the threads, which in turn weakens the screw. When framing always use nails unless you are using a screw that is rated or engineered specifically for a use.
