Minerals that form crystals in rock are sometimes rare and unusual. These are "jewels" or "gemstones."

The heat and pressure that form metamorphic rocks are also responsible for altering the minerals inside the rock often producing gemstones. For example, Coal is made from Carbon, if enough heat and pressure is applied to the Coal it will become a Diamond. The Diamond is still made from Carbon, but it's properties have changed because of the extreme conditions.

The natural diamonds found on the surface of the Earth are there as a result of Igneous processes. Diamond crystals form very very deep in the Earth and are brought to the surface in a Volcanic event that is extremely explosive - a "diatreme".
