Normally, mini-jack means a 3.5mm jack. 3.5mm jack or 1/8" jack are recognized descriptions of the connector series that include 2, 3 or 4 channel versions using the same diameter shaft on the male connector. Note that although 1/8" is not the precise size, it is still accepted as an accurate description of the connector range. Min-jack is not generally used as a description for specification purposes and the same name has been used to describe 2.5mm jack plugs, Mini-DIN connectors, RCS and phono connectors. If you are told that a connection is a mini-jack, you need to ask more questions to be sure of the connector.
"mini" refers to the size of the plug/jack. The original standard size was 1/4", still used on most professional equipment. "mini" plugs are 1/8" instead (known as 3.5mm jacks in Europe). The audio quality of a 1/8" jack is similar to 1/4" when both plug and socket are clean and undamaged. The smaller connector can suffer from noise due to contamination on the mating surfaces as it ages. Additionally, the small jack is not a robust connection in the way a 1/4" jack or other professional connectors are.
