Some can simply by eating too many leaves or tent caterpillars, which where I live are pretty destructive create their tent like nests in trees until the point where you can no longer save the tree. To stop this from happening, trim off all effected areas as soon as you spot them. The more you procrastinate, the more destructive the nest becomes. Tie up the branches in a thick plastic bag and mKe sure there are no holes. With any luck, you will not get them again in the same year. Where I live, every yard gets them once a year, around the fall.
Caterpillars can be considered harmful. They destroy foliage by eating plants and fruits. They cluster together and chew leaves, plants, and fruits.

the monarch butterfly
The viceroy butterfly does not eat milkweed, it is a mimic of the monarch butterfly which does eat milkweed. The milkweed makes the monarch butterfly toxic to birds. Once a bird eats its first monarch butterfly it gets so sick that it learns to never try to eat anything that looks like a monarch butterfly ever again. The viceroy butterfly has evolved to mimic the monarch butterfly to avoid being eaten by birds that have previously tried eating a monarch butterfly.
